Hazardous Exposures
When exposed to hazardous materials in the workplace or environments, your employees can become sick or injured. Harmful substances can enter the body through inhalation, ingestion, skin absorption, and injection. Learn about the three major classes of exposure hazards and how to control them.
Biological
Living organisms or products of organisms such as bacteria, fungi, infectious blood or bodily fluids, and other biologic sources can present a risk of injury or illness.
Chemical
Solid, gas, vapor, and liquid forms of chemicals can cause health risks.
Physical
Energy from the environment, such as noise, vibration, temperature, and radiation can affect the human body. This can lead to potential illness or injury.
Controls
Reduce exposure to hazardous substances by applying control measures. Examples include employee enclosures, local exhaust ventilation, revised work practices, and personal protective equipment (PPE).
